Where should grab bars go?
A common benchmark is the ADA standards. At the toilet, they call for a 42 inch side wall bar and a 36 inch rear wall bar, mounted 33 to 36 inches up. In an ADA transfer shower, bars run across the control wall and back wall. Placement should match the person using it, so we set heights with them present when possible.
Can grab bars be installed in any wall?
Not safely. Bars must anchor into studs or into solid blocking rated for at least 250 pounds. If the framing is not there, we add blocking. A bar anchored only in drywall will pull out under real weight.
Is a walk-in tub or a zero threshold shower better?
It depends on the person. Walk-in tubs run $3,000 to $10,000 or more and require sitting while it fills and drains. Zero threshold showers run $3,000 to $20,000 or more and are easier with a walker or chair. We talk through both.

The ADA standards for public buildings call for a door clear opening of at least 32 inches, measured with the door open 90 degrees. Many existing bathroom doors are narrower, and widening runs $500 to $2,500. Homes are not bound by the ADA and needs vary, so we measure your actual walker or chair and turning space.
