Building in Mingo and Jasper County

Mingo publishes nothing about building permits. The city site lists City Hall at 100 N Station Street, 641-363-4441, and stops there. No permit page, no zoning page, no inspector, no fees. So the building authority you will actually work with is Jasper County Community Development at 641-792-3084, which covers incorporated and unincorporated Jasper County. The county runs the 2006 International Building Code and the 2006 International Residential Code under Ordinance 40D. We have not seen that separately confirmed for Mingo, because Mingo confirms nothing. Treat the 2006 pair as the working answer and verify it with the county before you draw. Neighboring Marshalltown enforces the 2021 editions, and fifteen years of change sit between the two on egress, energy, wall bracing and deck attachment.Mingo was platted in 1884 and started as a coal town, named for Mingo, Ohio, which took its name from the Mingo people. That history is not decoration. Old mine workings and shallow subsidence are a real consideration for foundation work in Central Iowa coal towns. No code edition answers whether there is a void under your lot. That is a site question, and it gets asked before the footing plan, not after.Mingo sits about 30 road miles from Des Moines, closer than Newton. Call Busy Builders at 844-435-9800. Permit rules and fees change, so confirm both before you commit to a budget.

FAQs About Home Construction & Remodeling in Mingo, IA

The city publishes nothing about permits. City Hall is listed at 100 N Station Street, 641-363-4441, but the site carries no permit, zoning, inspector or fee information. Jasper County Community Development at 641-792-3084 is the building authority for incorporated and unincorporated Jasper County. Start there, and let the county tell you whether anything local applies.

They can. Mingo started as a coal town after it was platted in 1884. Old mine workings and shallow subsidence are a real consideration for foundation work in Central Iowa coal towns. No building code edition answers whether a void sits under a specific lot. That is a site investigation question, and it belongs at the start of a project. Ask it before the footings get poured.

Jasper County Ordinance 40D adopts the 2006 International Building Code and the 2006 International Residential Code. We have not seen that separately confirmed for Mingo, so confirm it with the county at 641-792-3084. Neighboring Marshalltown enforces the 2021 editions instead. Fifteen years apart, the books differ on egress, energy, wall bracing and deck attachment.

Colfax-Mingo Community School District. The Colfax and Mingo districts merged on July 1, 1985, and the combined district serves both towns. Colfax is a few miles away, so families here are used to a short drive. Confirm your specific address with the district before you buy a lot, because boundaries can change. We will not guess.

About 30 road miles, which puts it closer to Des Moines than Newton is. That matters for scheduling more than most people expect. Crews, deliveries and inspectors all travel, and travel time shows up in a schedule. Mingo is comfortably inside our service area, so a small project here does not carry a distance problem.

The Jasper County fee table applies, starting at $50 for construction value up to $5,000. Above that it runs $50 plus $8 per additional $1,000 to $25,000. Then $210 plus $7 per $1,000 to $50,000, and $385 plus $5 per $1,000 to $100,000. Mingo publishes no city fee at all. Call 641-792-3084 for current numbers, because fees change.
