Building in Albion and Marshall County

Albion is about 52 road miles from Des Moines. That is past our usual 50 mile line, and we would rather say so than pretend it is a metro suburb. We do serve it. We just schedule it differently, in longer blocks with fewer trips, so a crew is not burning half a day on the road. The town holds 448 people in only 0.60 square miles. That works out to about 743 people per square mile, which is dense for a place this size. Lots sit close together. Access, staging and setbacks matter more here than they do on an acre outside town.Albion publishes nothing about building permits. The city website carries a calendar and utility billing, but no permit, zoning or inspection pages. There is no published fee schedule and no adopted code edition we can confirm. So the first step is the phone. The city office answers at 641-488-2244, PO Box 219, Monday through Thursday from 8 to 4. That is a four day week, so plan your questions around it.Albion sits six miles from Marshalltown and inside the Marshalltown Community School District. It trades as part of that housing market.Call Busy Builders at 844-435-9800 to talk through a project. Permit rules and fees change, so confirm the current ones with the city before you commit to a budget.

FAQs About Home Construction & Remodeling in Albion, IA

Yes, and we will be straight about it. Albion sits past our usual 50 mile line. We handle that by scheduling in longer blocks with fewer round trips, so a crew is not spending half the day driving. The distance shows up in how we schedule more than anywhere else. Ask us early and we will tell you honestly what is workable.

The city publishes nothing about permits. Its website carries a calendar and utility billing, but no permit, zoning or inspection pages. There is no fee schedule and no adopted code edition we can confirm. Call the city office at 641-488-2244, Monday through Thursday from 8 to 4, and ask what your project needs.

None is published. We could not confirm an adopted edition from the city, so we will not print one. We build to current Iowa residential practice and confirm specifics with the city before plans are final. That includes the 42 inch frost line, the 5.7 square foot egress opening for basement bedrooms and the 7 foot habitable ceiling.

The Marshalltown Community School District. Students attend Marshalltown High School, six miles away. That district link is one reason Albion trades as part of the Marshalltown housing market rather than as a separate one. Buyers looking in Marshalltown look here too, which is worth knowing when you plan a remodel scope.

The town packs 448 people into 0.60 square miles, about 743 per square mile. That is dense for a small Iowa town. It affects where a garage fits, how we stage material and whether a lift can reach the back of the house. We walk the site and plan access before we commit to a schedule.

The town was founded in 1852 as La Fayette and renamed Albion in 1858, after the old poetic name for Britain. The housing stock reflects that history in places. We do not claim a historic district here, because we found none. If your home carries some age, we plan for what older framing and finishes tend to hide.
