Permit fees are based on project valuation as determined by the Building Official.

For subdivisions platted after January 1, 2002, utility availability must be certified.

Most of Granger is served by the Woodward-Granger Community School District (home of the Hawks, green and gold colors).

The district, headquartered in Granger at 1904 State Street, was founded in 1963 as a consolidation of Woodward and Granger schools.

It spans parts of Dallas, Polk, and Boone counties with approximately 1,236 students.

Campus sites include the Early Learning Center and Elementary School in Granger, the Middle School and High School in Woodward.

A section of Granger is also served by the Johnston Community School District.

Granger is home to the historic Granger Homesteads, a 225-acre New Deal subsistence homestead project built in 1935.

The project included 50 modern homes on approximately 4-acre lots designed to help struggling coal miners achieve economic independence.

First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt visited in 1936 and praised the project’s success.

Within 20 years, homesteaders repaid most of the $200,000 investment with no defaults.

This history reflects Granger’s strong community values and self-reliance.

Granger is approximately 25 minutes northwest of Des Moines.

Grimes is about 6 miles south, Polk City is 5.5 miles east, Woodward is 8.5 miles northwest, and Johnston is approximately 9 miles southeast.
