The district serves Colfax, Mingo, Ira, Valeria, and the portion of Mitchellville in Jasper County.

Both schools (elementary and junior/senior high) are located in Colfax at 204 N League Road.

The district enrolls approximately 715 students with a 12:1 student-teacher ratio.

Colfax is approximately 24 miles east of Des Moines, accessible via I-80 (Exit 155).

The drive to downtown Des Moines takes approximately 25-30 minutes.

Newton, the Jasper County seat, is about 12 miles east.

Colfax earned its nickname “The Spring City” after mineral springs were discovered in 1875.

At its peak, nine hotels offered mineral baths and four bottling companies shipped water nationwide.

The city also had major coal mining operations from 1881-1930s.

Today, the downtown is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Spring City Commercial Historic District.

Notable residents include James Norman Hall, co-author of “Mutiny on the Bounty,” and James B. Weaver, 1892 presidential candidate.

The Carnegie Library (built 1912-1913) remains in use, and the 480-acre Quarry Springs Park offers recreation.
