## Bathroom permits and venting rules in Ankeny

A bathroom remodel in Ankeny needs trade permits for any plumbing, electrical or mechanical work, and a building permit if walls or structure change. Ankeny also tightens the venting rule. Here is what the city requires, plus what our own bathroom jobs show about cost.

### When the city wants a permit

Ankeny’s handout requires a building permit for any work that physically changes structure or falls under city codes. Moving a wall or enlarging the room qualifies. Section 184.10 also deletes the model code’s exemptions for small electrical, gas, mechanical and plumbing jobs. Small trade jobs are not automatically exempt here.

### Exhaust fans

Section 184.38 requires bathroom ventilation that exhausts straight to the outdoors. The only exception is a toilet room with nothing but a toilet and a sink, which may use a recirculating fan. A bathroom with a tub or shower needs a fan ducted outside.

### Licensed trades and their permits

Plumbing and electrical permits for remodel work cost $50 each, flat, on the July 1, 2025 schedule. A mechanical permit is also $50. Licensed plumbers and electricians pull these, and on our jobs we coordinate those licensed subcontractors. Ankeny’s plumbing and electrical rules sit in their own code chapters.

### Inspections

Book bathroom inspections at 515-963-3533, giving the project address and the inspection type. Ankeny says an inspector usually arrives within 24 to 48 hours. Permits and fees can be handled online through Ankeny One Stop, where card payments carry a 3% fee.
